Building Mountains
Sitting on a beach they watch the rhythmic breathing of the ocean. One by one, waves lap the shore, giving and taking sediment. One crest at a time, building and destroying. Our lives and choices are like the ocean's breath. Each inhale and exhale allows for a decision. Each wave brings opportunity.
As the pebbles and rocks are pushed against feet they reach down to lift earth and water. As the water drains through cracks in the fingers a decision is made. Each makes their own as the water and finer particles return to the surf.
To the left and right the rocks are stacked. Each ocean breath brings another stone. Stones are placed left and right with the coming and going of every wave. Rock and earth slowly begin to accumulate. Almost too slow to notice at first, one side begins to build wider and higher. Over time great hills and mountains form to shadow the people. Some have equal piles on each side. Others have mountains on one side and hills on the other.
All live in the shadow of their constructions.
The waves are unceasing. The stones continue to come, one at a time, for as long as we endure.
Every rock a decision. Left or right, a choice that builds their earthworks higher and higher.
On the left, poor choices. To the right, good decisions. Accumulation of stones builds habits. Habits stacked over time make the person.
Waves continue, water draining from your hand, the decision is yours to be made…
Left or Right??
