Simple… Easy…

Simple and Easy…

Simple and easy, two words that seem to coexist in the same planetary orbit.

This reminds me of a saying that goes something like: everything is obvious, but only after you have arrived at the answer.

If simple were easy, everyone would live lives of ease and moderation. As a collective society we would not be burdened with hypervigilance and anxiety when all of our needs are met. With our basic survival needs met, our minds scan and search for alternative stressors to drive our need for worry.

If simple was easy, we would break the cycle of constant reinforcement of habits that do not serve our wellbeing.

If simple were easy, there would be no questions as to where we should spend our time and energy resources.

If simple were easy, there would be no confusion as to where our attention was paid.

If simple were easy, our stated values would match our behaviors.

Lifting would be easy if the weights weren’t so heavy.

Sauna would be more enjoyable if it was not so hot.

Running would be fun if I did not get out of breath.

Weight would not be an issue if I didn't have such a sweet tooth.

Reading would be great if it did not take so much time.

If simple were easy, everyone would do it most of the time.

Simple is not easy. Any bit of conversation and observation will plainly show that we are hardly effective at mastering simple or easy. One foot in front of the other for a thousand miles may be simple, but it is not easy. Making life and relationship choices that serve us and the ones we love should be simple and easy, it is not. Decisions are made and repeated. Those repeated decisions form habits. Habits are repeated and stacked and trajectories for our future selves are made. Trajectories over time become standards which create our very physical, mental and spiritual beings. This is who we are and no amount of words can change that.

If simple were easy we would all spend our time and dedicate our attention to that which we say we value.

What do you say you value?

Where do you actually spend your time and attention?

What you really value is where you spend your time and attention.

Simple AND Easy, spend your time and give your attention to that which you value and you will become the person you want to be, one decision at a time.

Simple.

Easy.
